About

A rice-farming family, a rice-country outfit

Southern Backwater Outfitters is a multi-guide operation running duck, goose, and dove hunts on private rice-prairie leases west and southwest of Houston, plus year-round thermal hog hunts.

Where it comes from

Owner Daniel O'Sullivan grew up in Arbuckle, California. His father was a rice farmer for thirty years, and he passed duck hunting down to his son right alongside the farming. Rice ground and waterfowl have always been the same thing in this family.

How the guiding started

Daniel got into guiding the natural way — taking friends and family out on their first hunts, then doing it enough that it became the work. Today the hunts are run by our team of guides, not one person.

What the trip is actually about

Ask Daniel and he'll point at the people first — the mornings in the blind, the memories that come out of them, and taking care of the resource so there's something to hand down. The shooting matters, but it isn't the whole point.

The country we hunt

Everything happens on private leases: rice prairie around Eagle Lake in Colorado County, El Campo in Wharton County, and Sealy in Austin County, plus leases in Matagorda County. Eagle Lake is widely known as the Goose-hunting Capital of the World. It's about an hour and a half from central Houston.
